According to the semi-official Shafaqna news agency, an Iranian soccer fan detained for dressing up as a man to watch her favorite soccer team play died a week after being set on fire.
Sahar Khodayari set herself on fire in front of a Tehran courthouse last week after facing a six-month prison sentence for trying to enter the Azadi Stadium.
In line for the match between Esteghlal FC against Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates - for the AFC Champions League match - Khodyari was stopped by officials at the entrance to the stadium.
It further became known that the woman was taken to a local medical facility with severe burns covering 90% of her body and lung damage. In protest, she set herself on fire. She was pronounced dead on Monday evening.
Since Iran has written laws prohibiting women from going to stadiums, Khodayari was accused of not fully adhering to the canons of the Islamic hijab, in particular, not covering her head.
The Campaign for OpenStadiums, a movement fighting for female viewers in Iran, said:
"There are no written rules that prohibit women from visiting stadiums, this is our big problem.
"Instead, we are still paying the price for the long-standing clerical argument that the atmosphere in stadiums is not suitable for women, that women are somehow responsible for a man's use of bad language, words and looks."
It wasn't always like that. BBC World Service journalist Ali Hamedani shared photos of Iran's national women's swimming team published in Majaleh Zanen magazine before the 1979 revolution. They were photographed at the same Azadi Stadium, which women are now forbidden to enter.
Mansour Mills, Amnesty International's researcher on Iran, said:
"There is no legal prohibition, although since 1981, this practice has been strictly observed by the Iranian authorities. They give different excuses - first of all, they don't want men and women to mix, obscene language and bad behavior are cited as reasons for the ban."
While women have attended a small number of matches in recent years, Mills said, "it was nothing more than a publicity stunt."
"There were a limited number of seats in the cordoned-off area of the stadium reserved for specific women," Mills said.
"There was a lot of criticism - tickets were distributed to the families of officials - many women tried to enter, but were kicked out or arrested." Watch UK online porn https://mat6tube.com/ Diana Dali, Patty Michova, Alina Henessy, Kira Queen etc.
